Fixing an Echo in Your VR Headset

Steps to try in order to eliminate an echo.

Updated yesterday

⚠️ IMMERSE VR is currently only compatible with Meta Quest headsets, versions 2 and newer. Find more details here.

Headset echo can be a common and frustrating audio issue that can disrupt your learning experience and enjoyment. Whether your mic is suddenly echoing because it's too sensitive, or others are hearing themselves through your headset because your mic is picking up and playing back their voices, getting these problems sorted out is key to a great class experience in IMMERSE.

Troubleshooting Steps

Here are some things to try if you are experiencing an echo while in a class:

  • Move away from reflective surfaces: Echo can be caused by reflections off walls, windows, and other hard surfaces. Try moving to an open area or a room with soft surfaces to absorb sound.

  • Ask for Guide Support: If you are experiencing an echo in an Immerse experience, please tell your Guide. They may be able to solve the problem immediately through voice chat settings on their end.

  • Adjust headset volume: In your Quest settings, lower the overall volume. High volume can cause sound leakage from the speakers, which the microphone can then pick up.

  • Mute the microphone: If you are not actively speaking, mute your microphone to see if the echo disappears. This can help confirm that the echo is being caused by mic feedback.

  • Update the headset software: Ensure your Quest headset is running the latest software version, as updates can include fixes for audio issues. You can check for updates in the settings menu.

  • Use external headphones: To bypass the Quest headset’s built-in audio system, plug a pair of wired earbuds or headphones into the 3.5mm audio jack on the side of the headset.

  • Toggle mic permissions on/off for the IMMERSE VR app:

    • On the app tile, click on the three dots and choose Permissions.

    • Toggle mic permissions "ON/OFF"

  • Factory-reset the headset: A hard restart can resolve temporary glitches.

    • Hold the power and volume down (-) buttons simultaneously until the boot screen appears.

    • Follow the on-screen prompts to reboot the device.
