While immersive learning takes place in a virtual environment, your real-world surroundings significantly impact your success and that of your classmates if attending live classes. To maximize your IMMERSE experience, please ensure your physical space is prepared to support your learning.
Please keep in mind that Live classes and Community Practice scenes will feature more physical interactivity compared to Self-Paced AI Lessons. This difference is important when deciding on the optimal setup for your learning experience on computer and VR.
Learning on Computer
Learning on a computer offers a more convenient yet still immersive option for your language learning!
Choosing an appropriate location
To ensure the best IMMERSE experience on your computer, prepare a comfortable, quiet, and distraction-free workspace. Have direct access to your keyboard and a place where you can speak freely. Keep your charger close at hand.
Join from a Quiet Environment
If your physical environment is noisy or disruptive, please keep yourself muted unless you are speaking. You should also consider moving to a quieter location. IMMERSE Guides have the authority to remove learners from the class if disruptive background noise continues after a warning.
Using a Mouse vs. Trackpad
A trackpad is sufficient for Self-Paced lessons, but live classes and community scenes are best experienced using a mouse so navigation and scene interactions aren’t limited.
NVIDIA Screen/Mouse Fullscreen Lock
When you enter your Homeroom, the app is designed to automatically switch to full screen mode. Due to the nature of the NVIDIA streaming functionality, this means you will need to exit full screen before you can switch between tabs or move your mouse to another screen. We apologize for this minor inconvenience.
Using Headphones w/ Mic vs. the Built-in-Speaker
For the best audio experience when using IMMERSE in a browser, we highly recommend using wired headphones and a directly connected microphone.
Why wired is better:
Wired Headphones: A wired connection provides the most stable data transfer, minimizing the risk of disconnections or audio issues that can occur with Bluetooth, especially when data is moving between multiple interfaces and servers.
Direct-Plugged Microphone: Using a microphone that is closer to your voice's point of origin and directly plugged in will result in clearer audio for others in the app. This setup reduces echo, minimizes background noise, and improves overall voice clarity.
Learning in VR on Meta Quest Headsets
Learning in VR is the most immersive option and will lead to faster fluency acquisition.
Initial Set Up
Getting set up for the first time is easy involves several straightforward steps, which you can find below.
Choosing an appropriate location
It is important that you select an appropriate location to log into IMMERSE for class. Choose a space that:
Is quiet enough that you can have a conversation without any background noise.
Has a strong and reliable Wi-Fi signal.
Has moderate lighting so the Quest headset can pick up your environment.
Is comfortable and has room to swing your arms at chest level around.
Is clear of obstructions for 6 feet in all directions if you are standing.
Join from a Quiet Environment
If your physical environment is noisy or disruptive, please keep yourself muted unless you are speaking. You should also consider moving to a quieter location. IMMERSE Guides have the authority to remove learners from the class if disruptive background noise continues after a warning.
Setting up your "Guardian" (Boundary) area
You will need to follow the Meta Quest instructions to set up a Guardian perimeter in your chosen location. Follow the steps in the video below to set up your Guardian:
Issues with Guardian
If you experience any problems with setting up your guardian, you may need to contact Meta's Quest Support for help.
Choosing to Sit or Stand
You can take IMMERSE classes while you are seated or standing! The choice is yours. The Immerse VR Application will prompt you to choose your preference between sitting and standing when you join. This setting will be saved for the next time, but you can change it at any time in your wrist menu.
Additional Considerations
Headphones significantly enhance the virtual reality experience on a Quest headset by offering superior audio quality, deeper bass, and more accurate spatial audio compared to the built-in speakers. This clarity and directionality allow for greater immersion in in-game sounds. Furthermore, using headphones ensures a more private listening experience and prevents sound leakage, minimizing disturbance to those around you.
VR Controller Wrist Straps
Always wear the controller wrist straps. This prevents your controllers from accidentally being dropped or flying off your hands while you interact with objects in a scene.
