What (and Who) Are AI Conversation Partners

Conversation Partner avatars are AI-powered practice tools seamlessly integrated into our Community Scenes, with the exception of the Language Exchange Commons. These avatars analyze your speech to facilitate natural, flowing conversations.

Each Community Scene features 2-4 distinct Conversation Partners, each with a unique name, appearance, and background story, enhancing the natural and engaging feel of interactions.

AI Conversation Partners are located in all Public and Private Community Scenes, aside from the Commons and Language Exchange.

Starting a Conversation

There are two different ways to begin chatting with an AI Conversation Partner once you’ve entered a Community Scene.

Walk Up to an Avatar While Exploring

  1. Locate an AI avatar and walk directly up to it.

  2. Click the Chat icon to start a conversation!

Teleport to an Avatar from the Scene Bulletin

  1. Find the Scene Bulletin to view all available avatars.

  2. Hover over an avatar's name to reveal the location icon.

  3. Press and hold the location icon to teleport directly to the avatar.

  4. Click the Chat icon to begin your conversation.

Feature Experience

Our AI avatars offer a dynamic and personalized language learning experience within both public and private Community Scenes. Designed to foster natural conversation, these avatars provide an immersive environment for users to practice and refine their language skills.

  • One-to-One Interaction: Only one user can speak to an AI avatar at a time for personalized engagement.

  • Public Conversations: All responses you give can be heard by those around you within Community Scenes, fostering shared learning and opportunities for human connection.

  • Natural Speech: No speech-to-text feedback is displayed to encourage natural listening and speaking.

  • Language Assist Feature Compatible:

    • Word Replay: Click individual words to replay them.

    • Sentence Replay: Press and hold a full sentence to hear it read aloud again.

  • Free-Flowing and Adaptable Conversations: Interactions with AI avatars are adaptable, allowing users to steer conversations based on their interests.

  • Themed and Evolving Topics: Conversations can evolve organically from scene themes based on user input, enabling exploration of diverse subjects.

  • Vast Knowledge Base: Avatars access a wide range of internet information, though content accuracy may vary.

  • Creative Storytelling: AI avatars can engage in creative storytelling for language practice.

  • Memory and Personalization: Avatars remember past interactions, enhancing personalized learning.

  • Proficiency-Based Adaptation: AI avatars adjust responses based on user language proficiency, simplifying for beginners and using complex language for advanced speakers.

⛔ Current Limitations

While continuously evolving, there are a few current limitations to the AI avatar experience:

  • Interaction Limit: Each AI avatar interaction allows a maximum of 10 user responses before a reset is needed.

  • Reset Notification: A "Reached chat max, please reset to continue" message appears, and the "Push to Record" button grays out when the limit is met.

  • Guidelines Violation Impact: Messages violating Community Guidelines still count towards the response limit.

  • No Full Transcripts: Full conversation transcripts are currently unavailable.

  • Speech-to-Text Not Enabled: User speech-to-text functionality is not enabled, limiting visual feedback.

  • No Geo Feedback: AI avatar interactions do not provide Geo feedback or suggestions, unlike Guided Conversations.


Frequently Asked Questions

Why did IMMERSE choose these avatar designs?

We've partnered with Meta for Education, which provides its partner apps with a software development kit containing approximately 30 diverse avatar designs created by the Meta team. We opted to implement most of these designs to offer a wide variety. For our Conversation Partners, we specifically select avatars from this collection that depict diverse professionals in appropriate work attire, prioritizing these over more eclectic personas, as this better aligns with our community and brand.

Why are there only 3-4 options in each scene?

The number of Conversation Partners in a Community scene is determined by the scene's size. Our largest scene accommodates four Conversation Partners, while other scenes host three. This distribution helps space out interactions, as all conversations occur in public areas and are audible. We considered what it would be like if every avatar station in a scene was occupied by someone talking and adjusted the spacing accordingly. Additionally, we needed to distribute 19 avatars across 7 scenes, and this arrangement provided the best breakdown to avoid avatar repeats within scenes.

Will there be new avatars introduced?

While IMMERSE currently doesn't have plans to update or create new versions of its avatars, we remain hopeful that Meta might develop new skins and share them with partner applications through a future software development kit, which would then allow us to explore these possibilities.

Can I change the pace at which the avatar talks or the accent it uses?

Avatars are programmed to speak at different rates: slower for lower levels and at a normal native pace for higher levels. While you can replay what an avatar said or translate words/sentences using the Language Assist Feature, there is currently no built-in function to adjust the text-to-speech rate. Avatar accents are also pre-programmed and cannot be changed. If you'd like to see these features in the future, please submit a Feedback Ticket via our support beacon.

Can I report inappropriate responses from AI avatars?

Absolutely! If our AI Avatars say something you think is inappropriate, please screenshot it and send it to our support team so we can look into it. Our developers and education team have carefully designed them to follow IMMERSE community guidelines and ignore any any negative input. They're here to help you learn languages, not to be used for mischievous purposes.

What should I do if the avatar doesn't respond correctly or in the way that I thought it should?

If you encounter difficulties with an AI Avatar, try rephrasing your question, asking for clarification, or redirecting the conversation. Should a particularly frustrating interaction occur, please provide a detailed account or screenshot of the conversation to our support team. This information will enable developers to adjust the avatar's prompting, aiming to resolve the issue you experienced. Our goal is to assist you, not impede your progress.
